The other day, I was all set to go see a movie at the theater — popcorn in hand, cold soda, and that excitement you get when you’re about to watch something *on the big screen*. But then, right before leaving, I thought: “Do I really need to deal with lines, overpriced tickets, and someone chewing loudly behind me. when I can watch the same movie on my couch, in HD, and pause it whenever I want?” So yeah, I stayed home. And honestly? No regrets.
Then it hit me: am I helping kill the cinema experience by choosing comfort and laziness?
Let's be real-streaming has become that friend who convinces you to stay in when you're already in your pajamas. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max. each with its way of keeping us glued to the screen, promising endless options, comfort, and zero human interaction-a plus these days, if I say so myself.
But still, there's one thing that they haven't quite captured: that collective sense of sitting in the dark, laughing and gasping and crying with dozens of people you've never met. I still remember the first time I saw *Avengers: Endgame* in theaters; that last scene felt like being at a stadium. And when I walked out, it felt like I had just witnessed history rather than watched a movie. Try that at home, with your cat sleeping on your lap.
On the other hand, streaming made movies more accessible. Not everyone has a theatre nearby, and the truth is, so many people have discovered amazing films for the mere fact that they were just one click away. Plus, studios realized they could make money faster and reach bigger audiences by releasing directly to platforms. It’s the classic “follow the money” situation.
So. is streaming killing cinema? I don't think so. It's just changing the rules of the game. The cinema isn't dead - it just needs to justify itself now. It has to be *an experience*, not just a big screen. Going to the movies has become a kind of ritual, something we do for the love of film, not because there's no other option.
Maybe, in the end, it is not streaming that's killing cinema, but just forcing us to decide what's truly worth putting on pants and leaving the house for. So, how about you? Do you still get up for the big screen or have you, too, fallen to the holy trinity: a blanket, couch, and "just one more episode"?
