Honestly, this feels more like well-packaged hype than an immediate revolution. Replacing copper with light makes perfect sense from a technical standpoint — higher speed, lower latency — but that’s not the main bottleneck right now. Data centers are hitting limits in power, construction, and even the electrical grid itself. Improving the cables doesn’t solve that. On top of that, optics are still significantly more expensive. And in this space, cost per bit is everything. It doesn’t matter if it’s more elegant if it’s not economically viable at scale. What really stands out here is the money: $700M into such an early-stage startup says more about the current AI wave than the maturity of the solution. It feels like a “let’s bet now because this might become critical infrastructure” move, even if real adoption is still far off. In the end, this could work well in specific niches (like high-performance rack-to-rack connections), but positioning it as a full replacement for copper feels premature. If AI growth doesn’t turn out as explosive as the market expects, a lot of these bets won’t justify the investment.
