There's something nobody tells you when you start digging into demoscene history: the scene never died, it's just that almost nobody agrees anymore on what it actually is. That alone should be your first hint that this isn't some closed chapter of computing history you can read about and move on. It's more like walking into a family argument that's been going on since the 80s and still flares up every once in a while. Let me get to the part most people are actually looking for without realizing it: yes, there are still festivals, people still compete, new productions still come out. Revision, in Germany, has been running since 2011 and still happens every Easter. Assembly, in Finland, goes back even further, to 1992, and it's still going strong. But what happens inside those events today is exactly where old-school sceners and newer ones split hard. If you came up on the Amiga or the Commodore 64, the whole point was never making a pretty graphic. It was cramming the impossible into bytes counted one by one, raw Assembly, no framework, no graphics library, nothing making your life easier. Today most demos lean on engines and high-level tools, GPUs doing the heavy lifting, and for one part of the scene that's just the natural evolution of digital art. For another part it's, bluntly, cheating dressed up as progress. There's no settled answer here, and anyone who tells you otherwise probably never spent time in an old scener forum watching this exact fight break out. If you want to actually understand what made this culture special, forget the visuals for a second and look at size coding, because that's where things get genuinely absurd. A 4KB intro — four thousand bytes, less than the plain text of this article — generating real-time 3D graphics with synced music is math and compression fighting against hardware, not against another artist. The example that always comes up when someone wants to prove how far this goes is farbrausch, the German group behind .kkrieger, a complete 3D shooter, levels, physics, all of it, running in just 96KB. For comparison, an average phone photo already blows past that. That's the kind of feat that separates someone who thinks "the graphics look cool" from someone who actually gets what's technically happening. Then there's another fight that's still personal for a lot of people, not just a mild historical debate: Amiga versus PC versus C64. It's not about which machine was objectively better. It's about which platform demanded more cleverness, more genuinely brilliant workarounds for hardware limits. Amiga people tend to think that's where the real creativity happened, messing with custom chips and copper lists in a way that feels almost like a craft today. PC demoscene from the 90s, for some veterans, gets looked at sideways, like it was just brute processing power solving a problem that should've been solved with cleverness instead. That still sparks real arguments whenever people from those three backgrounds end up in the same conversation. There's also a part of the history that's a bit uncomfortable, one a lot of people prefer to leave out when telling this story in a nicer light: demoscene was literally born from crackers signing their pirated software releases in the 80s. That intro screen that popped up before the cracked game eventually became a competition in its own right, separate from the crack itself. It's awkward for anyone who wants a clean "visionary artists coding pure art" narrative, but that's factually where all of this came from. Watch out for one mistake that comes up a lot when someone approaches this topic from the outside: confusing demoscene with modern generative art or creative coding, think Processing or TouchDesigner. The visual output might look similar on some superficial level, but the core difference isn't aesthetic, it's the rules of the game. Demoscene is built around extreme size and hardware constraints as a fundamental part of the competition, not about reaching a nice generative visual using whatever resources you've got. Another common mistake is assuming this is "just old European guys" territory. The scene is genuinely concentrated in Scandinavia and Germany even today, but that reflects where the historical competitions gained infrastructure and momentum, not some real geographic wall keeping outsiders from joining in. In the end there's a question nobody's ever settled, and probably never will: is demoscene without that brutal hardware limitation, the one that forced programmers into pulling off actual magic tricks, still demoscene, or did it just become pretty motion design borrowing a nostalgic name? People who came up in the 8-bit and 16-bit era tend to have a pretty strong opinion on that. And honestly, from what I've seen scrolling through those forums, it's rarely a gentle one toward anyone who disagrees.

nah I get why people are still salty about it tho. the entire point of a 4k or 64k intro was fighting the hardware itself, not just making something pretty with whatever's available. if the GPU is doing half the creative work for you the challenge kind of evaporates, no?

honestly the whole "GPUs ruined demoscene" take is kind of tired at this point. farbrausch was already pushing procedural tricks hard back in the day, using more power today isn't cheating, it's just... the tools got better? nobody complains that painters use better brushes now
